Camp FAQ

Can children camp at FRONTERRA?

We welcome children of all ages to experience the beauty of nature and the great outdoors. We believe that connecting children to the natural world is vital for their development and encourages a sense of responsibility towards the environment. We also want to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all our guests and as such kindly ask parents to supervise their children at all times and to respect the tranquility of the surroundings, specially during the quiet hours between 8PM and 8AM. We also ask parents to make sure their children are respectful of the natural environment by staying on designated trails.

Why children are no allowed in the Lakeside tents?

The safety of our guests is our top priority and the lakeside sites can be potentially hazardous for children when the water level is high. Additionally, we aim to provide a peaceful and relaxing environment for all our guests and lake neighbours and noise travels incredibly well across lakes. Also, wind on North Bay can disrupt a child’s sleep which is in no one’s interests. We understand that family vacations are important and we love to welcome children at the farm but we feel that it’s necessary to maintain this policy in order to ensure the safety and comfort of all our guests.

Are pets allowed on the farm or in the camp?

To ensure the comfort of all of our guests, we have implemented a strict no-pet policy with the exception of certified service animals. While we understand that pets are often considered part of the family, we ask that our guests respect our policy and leave their furry friends at home or hire a dog boarding service when visiting our farm and camp. We would be happy to provide you with the names of nearby dog boarding operations that can provide excellent care for your pet while you enjoy your stay with us. Our aim is to maintain a safe and peaceful environment for all of our guests and we believe that this policy will help us achieve this goal.

Do you offer early check-in?

Generally we do not offer early check-in at our camp. Our team needs considerable time to properly prepare each tent for our guests’ arrival. We kindly ask that you plan to arrive during our scheduled check-in time beginning at 3PM and ending at 8pm. If you do plan to arrive early, please let us know several days prior to your arrival and we will do our best to accommodate your need. Alternatively, if you have to arrive early, we encourage you to explore the beautiful beach next-door at North Beach Provincial Park or grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants in Wellington, located 15 minutes away by car.

Do you offer late check-in?

We kindly encourage our guests to arrive before 8PM to benefit from our valet service for a smooth check-in experience. We understand that travel plans can sometimes be unpredictable and that’s why we have implemented a self-check-in process that allows guests to check-in past this time. Please simply notify our guest service that you will arrive late and we will send you detailed instructions prior to your arrival on how to access your tent suite. Since there will be no valet service available to help with your luggage, you will be provided with pull cart for you belongings. You can also bring a small suitcase that you can easily carry on your own and we will valet your other belongings come morning. We kindly remind our guests that there is no lighting in the forest at night, and therefore we highly recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight to safely navigate your way to the tent after dark. Please note that if you arrive outside of our regular check-in hours without prior notice, we may not be able to accommodate your late check-in request.

Do you offer late check-out?

We understand that our guests may want to make the most out of their experience at FRONTERRA. We are pleased to offer a late check-out option for our guests who wish to extend their stay past the expected checkout time of 11 AM. For $75, guests can enjoy a leisurely morning and check out as late as 4 PM. Please note that this option is subject to availability and can only be determined on the day of checkout. We recommend that guests inquire about this option the night before the day of check-out.

Is food provided with the stay?

At FRONTERRA, we believe in providing our guests with the freedom and flexibility to enjoy their stay on their own terms without adding more costs. To this end, we do not provide food with our accommodations yet each of our accommodations features a self-catering kitchen giving our guests the opportunity to prepare their own meals and snacks according to their own preferences and schedules. During the summer months, we have fresh vegetables for sale from our own garden and also encourage our guests to explore the local food options including amazing local restaurants and farmer’s markets nearby where you can find delicious farm-to-table items. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the culinary culture of Prince Edward County and support local farmers and businesses.

Are there mosquitos?

At the farm, we are fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful wildlife and nature. However, along with the beauty of nature, we must also coexist with the wildlife that inhabits the area including mosquitoes. Although we take many steps to minimize mosquitoes – such as spraying natural deterrents, building wind tunnels, and filling low-lying areas – during the summer months, there can be mosquitos, particularly at dusk and dawn. Although we are extremely fortunate to be on the first landfall of the prevailing Westerly winds coming across Lake Ontario and thus have far fewer mosquitoes than other locations, we recommend that our guests come prepared with insect repellent and protective clothing to avoid mosquito bites. Note also that each tent has full screens to prevent them from entering inside to provide you with a refuge should they take a particular liking to you. While we cannot guarantee a completely mosquito-free experience, we can say that we have taken every possible step to minimize their presence to provide you with comfortable and enjoyable stay.

What types of wildlife are in the forest?

As a sustainable farm located in a forested area, there is a diverse range of wildlife that can be observed, such as deer, foxes, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, fishers, a myriad of birds and waterfowl, and of course, our furry far-to-smart friends, the raccoons. To ensure the safety of our guests and wildlife, we ask that our guests do not approach or feed any wildlife they may encounter while ensuring that all food is stored properly and disposed of in designated spaces. We also ask that guests follow our “leave no trace” policy, leaving their camping area clean and free of any trash or food waste for the benefit of the animals and the next campers.

Is the camp quiet at night?

At FRONTERRA, we want every guest to have “the best night’s sleep ever” surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. We understand that camping can be a social activity and that some guests may want to spend time chatting around the campfire or enjoying music. However, we ask that all noise is kept to a minimum and soft camp voices are used after 8 pm to ensure that everyone can rest peacefully. We also ask that guests respect their neighbours and keep noise levels down throughout the day as loud noises can disturb others who may be trying to relax or take a nap.

Can I get a refund in case of inclement weather?

We understand that inclement weather can be frustrating and inconvenient but camping is not about the weather. It is about you in nature and weather is nature. As such, we have a 14 day before arrival refund policy in place which allows us to maintain our commitment to providing a high-quality camping experience at an approachable price point for all of our guests, regardless of the weather. During inclement weather, our luxury tents offer a cozy and comfortable refuge where you can unwind and relax protected from the rain. You can curl up with a good book and listen to the soothing sound of raindrops falling on the tent, or enjoy playing a board game with your friends or family creating memorable moments during your stay. Our tents are designed to keep you dry and comfortable, so you can still enjoy the beauty of the outdoors even when it’s raining.

Is there electricity or wifi in the camp?

At FRONTERRA, we believe in the beauty of unplugging and disconnecting from technology. Therefore, our luxury tents do not have access to standard electricity. But don’t worry, this provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature without the distractions of modern life. Instead of staring at screens, you can spend your time enjoying the beauty of the surrounding forest, relaxing in your comfortable tent, or stargazing under the night sky. Trust us, the experience is well worth the sacrifice of a little bit of technology. We understand however that some folks can’t bear to part with their devices, so don’t fret – we’ve got your back! Just ask our friendly Camp Ranger for a portable charger. We won’t judge – we promise!

Are campfires allowed?

At FRONTERRA, we love campfires! Each of our campsites comes equipped with an individual fire pit and wood is available for purchase on site. We kindly ask that our guests do not bring their own firewood to the camp because it can introduce harmful pests and diseases to the forest ecosystem. By purchasing firewood from the camp, guests can be sure that it is locally sourced and safe to use in the campfire. Additionally, we also ask our guests not to harvest wood from the forest. Taking wood from the forest can disrupt the natural balance of the ecosystem and harm wildlife habitats. It is important to note that during times of extreme dryness or fire hazard, local authorities may install a fire ban in the area. We require our guests to respect any fire bans that may be in effect to ensure the safety of all guests and the surrounding environment.
